Canine-Integrated Enrichment Programs : Creating Connections

                                               Program Overview

Safe Handling

Participants learn how to hold the leash, keep the dog in proper position, and manage the timing of reinforcement.  Emphasis is put on perspective taking and how the dog may feel or react in a certain situation.  The participant learns how to protect the dog’s physical and emotional boundaries.

Appropriate Greetings

Participants learn how and when it is appropriate to allow the dog to make a social connection with another dog or a person.  They learn the skill of introducing the dog, answering questions, and engaging in conversation while keeping the interaction appropriate and safe for all.

Bond Building

Participants learn how the feelings associated with security and love are the building blocks to a relationship with the dog.  The participant experiences an increase in responsiveness and connectedness from the dog as they progress through the stages of relationship building.

Anticipation / Problem-Solving

Participants navigate a series of training and maneuvering situations with the dog.  They learn to avoid potential challenges by changing their positioning and personal affect. Participants are encouraged to find ways to creatively solve challenges independently.

Sequencing Activities

Participants learn various sequences to achieve a training goal.  Multiple step sequencing and cueing skills are developed.  This includes proper timing and reinforcement.

Perspective Taking / Reading Body Language

Participants learn to look at the world from the dog’s point of view.  They gain insight into how or why a dog may be reacting in a certain way.  Participants learn that the dog’s body language is the first indicator of what the dog is thinking or feeling.

Coaching

Participants learn the role of leading with confidence. They learn various reinforcement systems for the dogs, and how each can be an effective motivator.  Participants learn how adjusting their own behavior can affect the behavior of the dog.

Social Enrichment

In addition to skill building, the program promotes social engagement including interpersonal relationship development between participants and session providers.  Participants practice their social-emotional skill development, and in doing so, help to improve their confidence.

Stress-Reduction

Participants who often feel anxious or dysregulated have an opportunity to engage in an activity that has been proven by research to have physiological benefits and calming effects on the nervous system.
